This Facility on Stokes Hill Wharf brings to life two iconic stories that are important to the Northern Territory, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Bombing of Darwin Harbour.

The first story is about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, affectionately known throughout Australia as the RFDS.

Founded by the Reverend John Flynn in 1928, it began its aero medical operations in the Northern Territory in 1939.
Using the latest innovations in holographic technology, the hologram of John Flynn tells the story of Flynn’s vision and its realisation into the RFDS of today.

Experience a decommissioned RFDS Pilatus PC-12 aircraft completely aero-medically equipped and learn about the activities of the RFDS’s pilots, engineers, doctors, nurses, and the experiences of the patients that are carried and cared for each day, through ghost holgrams and touch screen TVs.

The second iconic story is about the attack on Darwin by Japan on the 19th February 1942, which brought destruction to the city, and many of the experiences of what happened that day are told through the modern and exciting technology.

This exhibit features a virtual reality experience about the events on that fateful day and a projection window of the Japanese air attack on the harbour as well as ghost hosts of John Curtain and Hajime Toyoshima. View a life-sized replica Japanese Zero aircraft suspended from the ceiling and a model of the flying boat, Camilla.

Learn about the Bombing of Darwin from the life size hologram of Rear Admiral Etheridge Grant, as he narrates his version of events on that day when he was blown into the water while trying to return to his ship, the William B Preston. He spent most of the attack in the water, clinging to a large ship’s buoy before being rescued.

The Virtual Reality experience transports you back to Darwin Harbour of 1942. You are at the original Stokes Hill Wharf, standing on the deck of the Neptuna as it was bombed until it exploded and sank as well as sitting on the wing of an American Kitty Hawk, engaging in a dogfight with the Japanese Zero's.
